It's your last weekend to donate gear to help native Himalayan mountain guides.

Eric Legvold, the University of Montana student who organized the Gear for the Garwhal drive, said the effort has gone well, but he could still use more mountaineering and expedition gear.

The gear goes to guides in the Indian Himalaya near Nanda Devi, and nearly any sort of outdoor gear will be better than what the guides currently have.

Legvold, a recreation management student at the University of Montana, encountered the guides during a study-abroad class set up by the Nature-Link Institute and UM. The gear drive is part of an internship and Legvold's way to give back to those he met in India.

"What I'm trying to do is to get them that gear so that they can do their work more safely and more comfortably," Legvold said.

Missoulians can donate this weekend at four drop-off locations: the Trailhead, Pipestone Mountaineering, Bob Ward's and the UM Outdoor Recreation Program office. Those places will have a "Gear for the Garwhal" box with additional information about Legvold's program.
